The commission - Describe Abbotsford in a painting
My challenge was – to show case Abbotsford as it’s never been seen before, a city in the country, the many components that contribute to its success and growth. A central recognizable landmark such as the space needle in Seattle would have made the task easier however; living in Abbotsford for over 60 years has given me some insight and pride as to what we have all achieved so I have arranged eleven key elements that help to describe the beautiful city we live in - Abbotsford.
The achievements and the pride of Abbotsford are showcased in the eleven key elements listed below:
- The painting points to the south east views of Mount Baker from Abbotsford, situated in the Central Fraser Valley
- Many beautiful High Rise buildings now part of our landscape with views of the country side
- The flat agricultural farm land in the distance featuring dairy, crop & raspberry framing
- Young people with growing children choosing Abbotsford as their place to live and raise their family.
- Abbotsford bus service (the bus number is 2010 - the year of the painting)
- Abbotsford International Airport, hosting the world famous air show –
- The number 1942 on the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress, represents the year approval was given to construct the airport base
- Tail wing of a West Jet commercial airplane – West Jet as well helping to grow our community
- Abbotsford has recently hosted the “Street of Dreams” (showcasing beautiful homes on the mountain with rock retaining walls)
- City of Abbotsford’s most recent project, Plan A - The Reach Galley & Museum and Abbotsford Sports Center.
- Our pride UFV – University of the Fraser Valley
